Evelyn Abdo

Evelyn Abdo, 88, of Onondaga Hill, died Thursday, November 20, 2008 at home surrounded by her family. Born in Syracuse, New York, she was the daughter of Tawfick George and Cocab Seikaly Abdo. She was a graduate of Syracuse University with certification in School Administration and Supervision and a Masters Degree in Elementary Education. She retired from the Syracuse City School District after teaching for 36 years. Evelyn was a member of American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) and started the Syracuse chapter in 1982, Chair of Education Committee, National Association of Arab-Americans, U.S.S. Liberty Supporters, Onondaga Art Guild, Bradford Art Group, volunteered at Upstate Medical Center, Onondaga Free Library and WCNY Tel-Auc where she donated several paintings for the auction. Evelyn's professional memberships included being a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (Alpha Omega Chapter); Central New York Chapter of International Reading Association; Association for Childhood Education; Syracuse Teacher's Association; Syracuse School Administrator's Organization; New York State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development; Onondaga County Retired Teachers Association and numerous curriculum committees in the Syracuse City School District . Evelyn was a lifetime member of St. Elias Orthodox Christian Church. She was the Church School Director for 15 years, choir member, member of Committee for Religious Education of Can-Amer Region; President of Antiochian Christian Youth Organization for two years and Delegate to Regional and Archdiocesan Conventions of Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese. Evelyn received the Kiwanis Laymen's Award; Outstanding Member award from the Antiochian Christian Youth Organization; was Salutatorian of her graduating class from Syracuse City Normal School; won several awards in juried art shows for her water color paintings and had several of them accepted for the New York State Fair. She touched and inspired many lives and will be missed by many more. Evelyn is survived by one sister, Selma Abdo of Onondaga Hill, New York and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Louis George and Kamal George Abdo.
