Janet Stacy Whiting

Janet Stacy Whiting, 73, of Syracuse, NY, passed away on January 28, 2017 and traded her momentary affliction for an eternal weight of glory, as in 2 Cor. 4: 16-18 and 5:1-8. Janet was born in Boston, MA, and grew up in Camden, NY, with her four sisters and one brother. As a teen, Janet enjoyed playing cello and cheerleading. She graduated from Camden Central in 1961. She worked in her parent’s candy store, Sta-see Candies. Later she worked at in Hilliard’s Kitch-in-Vue Candies on Martha’s Vineyard. She attended Union College in Barbourville, KY, where she met and married Ernest Bennett. She majored in Elementary Education and minored in English. Shortly after, in 1966, her brother Ray passed away; he was only 18. In 1970, she gave birth to her daughter, Andria. She performed emergency teaching in OH and KY. She also she taught her own elementary classroom for a season. Later, she returned to NY with her daughter and divorced. As a single mom, she worked hard to care for her daughter, in spite of her own health issues. She made sure her daughter learned the joy of museums, rollerskating, snowmen, snowhorses, and indoor water fights. Janet worked several years at Syracuse Savings Bank as a data processor, where she met Harvey Whiting. They married, and enjoyed bicycling together, camping, caring for their pets, trips to visit his parents in Lacona, NY, and incredible unconditional love for 29 years. As a housewife, Janet gave gifts of her own beadwork, wrote letters in calligraphy, and mentored in a community program. After Harvey passed, she grieved immensely; she then immersed herself in many community programs and became thankful for the comfort of new friends, including, but not limited to, Ava Seegars and Jan McNish. Nearing the end of her time here, she was thrilled to be a part of her Sunday School class and the Worshipping Women of Grace Baptist Church. She will be remembered for her determination, enthusiasm, and fun loving spirit. Janet is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey W. Whiting, her brother, Raymond Stacy, Her mother, Elizabeth Stacy, Her father, Walter Stacy, her brother-in-law, Bud Thurber, her father-in-law, Kenneth Whiting, and her Mother-in-law, Nellie Whiting. She is predeceased by former KY in-laws also: Justus Bennett, Jan (Bennett), Edward Bennett, Mary & Cecil Bennett, and her honorary mother-in-law, Irene Runyon. Janet leaves to mourn her passing: her daughter, Andria Bennett, her four sisters: Susan Thurber, JoAn (Peter) Dunn, Diane (Ronald) Murdock, and Brenda (Dominick) Mastromonaco, her ex-husband Ernest Bennett and family, her intimate long distance relatives including her Aunt Chris Wilson, Aunt Dorcas Brown, and her cousin, Evelyn Schroter, along with other cousins, nephews, nieces, family members, and friends. No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Grace Baptist Church, 423 Valley Dr., Syracuse, NY 13207.
