Margaret Bryan Hedges-Yost November 27, 1911 - March 18, 2014 Margaret Bryan Hedges-Yost passed away March 18th at the age of 102, having spent the last five years of her life at Menorah Park, following a stroke. She was born in Bath, New York to Daniel Beach Bryan and Anna Rowlett Aulls on November 27, 1911 and was younger sister to Leslie, Lee and Ernest Bryan. She graduated from Syracuse University in 1933, a member of Alpha Phi sorority, and received her Masters Degree in Social Work from Case-Western Reserve University. She spent several years as a psychiatric social worker at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City before moving to Syracuse in 1941 with her husband, Herbert (Ben) Hedges, Jr. There, she worked for Child and Family Services, before staying at home to care for their two sons, Bryan and Stephen. She went on to be active in her community, volunteering at Rockefeller Memorial Church as Director of Sunday School and active in Zonta Circle, among other church activities. After marriage, in the summer, and longer in retirement, much of her life was spent at the family farm in Wainscott, New York. Evenings, she would be found at the beach watching the moon rise over the ocean, and then during many joyous days, introducing her grandchildren to the splendors of nature on the eastern end of Long Island. They became great sleuths, finding the best crops of beach plums, and were knowledgeable about identifying native birds by their looks and song. At the duck pond, the bird sanctuary, the East Hampton Library, while making beach plums into jelly, eating ice cream or riding ponies, she convinced her grandchildren of her devotion. After Ben Hedges died in 1988, Peggy married again to William Yost, local designer and maker of stained glass windows. They shared a remarkable seven years of marriage and a great interest in the beauty of glass, and she enjoyed a lifetime of collecting Steuben and Sandwich glass. She was among the oldest and most loyal SU sports fans. Her brother, Leslie Bryan, was Athletic Director in the 1930\'s and 1940\'s, and Saturdays in the Fall were spent cheering on the team. Sundays included following her favorite Syracuse players in the pros. She leaves wonderful memories for her sons, Bryan (Liz) and Stephen Hedges and their children, Amy, Jonathan, Jared, Sarah, Katy and David, and great grandchildren Ruby and Leo. A celebration of her life and burial in Wainscott Cemetery on Long Island will take place at the convenience of the family.
