Mary Jane Thousand

Mary Jane Thousand, born August 6, 1922, to George and Gertrude Sutton, died on April 9, 2016, at age 93. Mary Jane was a graduate of Onondaga Valley Academy and CCBI. She worked as a legal secretary of many prominent attorneys in Syracuse, including John Timothy Smith and Maurice Swartz. She was an administrative secretary for four past presidents of OCC, including Drs. Marvin Rapp and Roy Price. She loved her job in the college physical education department gaining many lifelong friends. After retiring from OCC, she was employed by Kelly Girls and was named employee of the month in 1992. She also volunteered at Christ the King Retreat House for 20 years and worked for the Board of Elections for 20 years. She was a fantastic mother, a devoted Catholic and a proud American. World War II and the Depression Era greatly influenced her life. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Jamesville, St. James in Syracuse, and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse. Mary Jane’s travels included Ireland, the Mexican peninsula, Central America as well as Europe. While in awe of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, she was separated from her tour group and experienced a very unique time in the City of Rome! Also, since 1972, she spent a lot of time with her husband and family in Cape Vincent. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Robert Carl Thousand, Sr.; son, Jerry Thousand; beloved sister, Trudy Thousand; and twin brothers, Jack and Jim Sutton. She loved her two doggies, Foxy and Teddy, who gave her much joy. Mary Jane is survived by her daughters, Susan (Larry) Placito, Barbara Thousand, Iris (Pete) Dixon; sons, Robert, Jr., James (Kelly), Roderick (Carol), Fred (Maguy), and Richard (Debbie); sisters-in-law, Dorothea Christopher of Ithaca and Peg Sutton; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Callings hours will be Thursday, April 21, 2016, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Friday, April 22, 2016, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, Inc., 2584 Field Lane, LaFayette, New York 13084. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 259 East Onondaga Street, Syracuse, New York 13202. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt.
