Shirley Ann Carbacio

Shirley Ann Carbacio, 87, of DeWitt, NY died April 25th, 2017 at the Cottages at Garden Grove in Cicero. Shirley is predeceased by her sister Audrey (Van Slyke); husband Stephen and son, Stephen Jr. She is survived by her son Mark; daughter Marsha (Phillips); two sisters, Shawn (Dutch) and Linda (Matteson-Sifer); two grand-daughters Susan and Stephanie and great-grandson, Jude. The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff at the Cottages at Garden Grove for their deep commitment and compassionate care they have provided to Shirley in the course of the past year. Shirley was born February 4th, 1930 in Rome, NY, daughter of the late Jane Myfddwy Shepardson and Kenneth Matteson. As a girl, she spent idyllic summers at her grandmother’s farm in Truxton, where she’d recall riding her bike around the small town and helping her grandmother with the canning, a tradition she passed down to her own children and grandchildren. As a young woman, she was an avid rollerskater, often found on weekends at one of the many clubs dotting the neighborhood where I-81 now stands. It was there she met the Carbacio brothers, including Stephen, who asked her to rollerdance with him one evening, and whom she would marry on October 16th, 1948. Through many trials, including the early loss of their infant son, together they built a family with Shirley at its center. In the course of her long life she worked at Syracuse China gilding plates; as a bookkeeper for small businesses and in her spare time, bred Doberman Pinschers and was an active member of a local Ladies’ Bowling League, where she won numerous awards. But perhaps one of Shirley’s greatest gifts was that of the long, deep friendships she cultivated throughout her life and maintained up until her death; friends of over 50 years, such as Addie and Walt Slazik of Fairmount and many neighbors on Terrace Circle, her connections to whom spanned generations and continue to through her surviving family to this day. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held Saturday, May 6 th , 2017 at 12 pm at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, 4612 S. Salina Street in Syracuse. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Burial will be Monday, May 8th, 2017 at 9 am at White Chapel Memorial Gardens for any who wish to attend.
